Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving, noted as the first day of traditional Christmas shopping, during which crowds of consumers are drawn to shops, supermarkets, groceries stores and other commercial outlet for special offers on their goods and services.
It was a massive hit in the U.S, Brazil, Japan even in Durban South Africa, but reverse was the case in Britain and this scenario is not far-fetched in the Nigeria context. Here are four (4) reasons why black Friday might be a failure in Nigeria this 2016
Economic Recession.
The harsh economic situation in our country is one of the biggest challenges that will hinder this year’s Black Friday. Most shoppers will be prevented from participating in this annual event. Money is key to purchase anything you want. How do you purchase goods, if you don’t have money to buy them? Everyday people lose their jobs, non-employment rate on the rise. The economy is static, the cost of goods keep increasing while income remains static. So tell me, how an ordinary Nigerian citizen can benefit from this if he/she has no financial ability?
Foreign To Most People.
As we all know, Black Friday is foreign to most Nigerians. The tradition started in the United States and it is usually the Friday after Thanksgiving Day - the fourth Thursday in November. Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early and offer promotional sales. Black Friday is a special day over there, but here the day is as ordinary as any other day.
No Good Knowledge About It.
Not everyone has good knowledge about what Black Friday is. I have heard people giving me different interpretation, dishing out their own vision of what it meant, no wonder big shop, groceries stores, online e-commerce sites spent a lot on promotions to enlighten the Nigerian populace about this special day.
Market Trust.
Most people in our country don’t believe that any shop, supermarket, Manufacturer can genuinely offer them discount on goods purchase from their stores. Some common believe is either the goods are bad, close to expiration date or the shops wanted to dispose their old stocks so as to make room new arrival.
I believe that more sensitization is needed so that our supermarkets, manufacturers and online e-commerce stores can benefit from this huge business opportunity.
You can add any point or observation you felt was not mentioned.
